# Think about texture, not just the food's name

Practical chapter 1

With fixed braces, food choices involve the attached appliance as well as your teeth. Understanding texture and preparation gives you a more useful starting point than a long list of foods labelled good or bad.

## The appliance stays attached while you eat

Hard, crunchy or sticky food can damage brackets or wires. Some foods can be prepared differently; a texture that remains hard or sticky may need a different choice. The British Orthodontic Society distinguishes softer food and cut\-up portions from foods that put the appliance at risk.

A food's name alone does not describe the force needed to bite it. Preparation matters, and your own team may give more specific directions for your appliance.

## Three examples of the distinction

These general examples illustrate the texture question. They are not a complete menu or a guarantee for an individual appliance.

| Food or texture | What changes the question? |
| --- | --- |
| A whole apple | Cut\-up pieces change the need to bite into the whole fruit. |
| A sandwich or pizza | Smaller pieces change the bite; a hard crust can remain hard even in smaller pieces. |
| Sticky caramel or hard candy | Making the portion smaller does not remove the sticky or hard texture. |

## Protecting the appliance and caring for teeth are different jobs

Texture is not the only consideration. Sugars can contribute to plaque\-related tooth decay, and acidic drinks can affect enamel. A drink being sugar\-free does not necessarily make it non\-acidic. The food question and the cleaning question therefore belong together.

This guide does not plan your nutrition or dietary needs. Use the instructions from your treating team and appropriate dietary advice for your circumstances.

## A fictional lunch\-planning example

Sam wants to keep a familiar lunch rather than start with an unfamiliar shopping list. Sam and a supporting adult separate three questions: how the food is prepared, whether its texture remains a problem and what the treating team has said. The example organizes a conversation; it is not a prescribed meal.

- What would Sam otherwise bite into whole?
- Which item stays hard or sticky even after preparation?
- Which detail needs checking against Sam's actual instructions?

## Bring the practical question, not a perfect menu

If lunch comes from a cafeteria, shared kitchen or packed bag, describe that setting when you discuss care. You can ask how the written directions apply to the food you actually encounter. A teen can name their preferences while an adult helps with shopping or preparation, if that support is useful.
